Earhart was a record setter.

Earhart was also known for setting records; however, she only broke two records. Her first record was set in 1922, where she became the first woman to fly solo above 14,000 feet (about 4.27 km). Then, in 1928, she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean as a passenger in the Fokker F. VII, and the first to beat two feminine speed records. In total she set about 12 records. Earhart also became the 12th female to become a certified pilot in the United States. Her biggest score was not until 1932 when she crossed the Atlantic Ocean alone. The flight took 14 hours and 56 minutes, from Harbour Grace, Newfound Land, to Londonderry, Northern Ireland. In achieving this record, she was awarded “The Distinguished Flying Cross- a military decoration awarded for “Heroism or extraordinary achievements,” while participating in an aerial flight” (Editor 1).
